Even though there's a 13 year gap between Sam and Henry, one of the toy products that they both love is LEGO. Honestly, I know most adults love to build with LEGOs. I had the opportunity to try a new LEGO product out with Henry that combines two really awesome things: building with LEGO and reading!
I'm a huge fan of reading with my kids. Our home is filled with children's books and Henry's favorite thing to do is sit on the couch or his reading tent and have someone read to him. Sometimes, as soon as someone walks through the door to visit, he has a book ready and is begging them to read it to him.
Colin and Sam did this when they were little too. I know research shows that looking at and reading books to toddlers from early on creates stronger, better readers in elementary school. I believe this completely. Sam and Colin were always at the very top of their classes in reading, and Sam still aces his state testing in reading.
LEGO is introducing a new product called LEGO DUPLO Read and Build. It is a set of LEGO building bricks that correlate with a book, which leads your child to engage in the storyline and help them to learn to read.
The pictures in the book demonstrating which LEGO bricks to use are colorful and simple, making it easy for even a young toddler to find the appropriate bricks.
Each page shows you the bricks you need using a large, easy-to-follow format with bright colors.
I can do this!
Henry really enjoyed the book and building the plane and car. He caught on quickly and it was really fun to do with him! At first he just wanted to do his own thing, but once he caught on that he needed to find the pieces in the picture and put them together the way it showed in the book, it became a fun game for him. It is a simple concept that is perfect for this young age, and I look forward to trying new books and sets.

My son, George, is 2 1/2 and obsessed with Legos. It is wonderful, especially because he and his dad really bond when playing with them. I think the Read and Build is genius, because the interactiveness will help hold an active toddler's interest, therefore helping him learn to read.
Love your blog!
Oh my goodness! You can never have too many Legos! My 3 & 4 year old would LOVE this! Read a book and then build at the same time! That is an incredible idea! :)
Hope I get picked and thank you!
My son started playing with legos @ 29 years ago. He's now 31 years of age and has children of his own ranging from 11 months to 13 years. So, recently I pulled out his 15 gallon tub of Legos. My grandchildren literally spend hours together constructing (and deconstructing), laughing and playing. I thought (and still do think) that Legos are a fabulous way to spark the imagination (no matter what the age, whether 3 or 83). I, as well, have shelves of children's books and encourage reading at a very early age. To combine reading and building with Legos is a fabulous idea!! Not only will the children have fun building, but they will want to read and learn how to follow directions to make the story they are reading come to life. I look forward to purchasing the Lego Read and Build sets for my grandchildren. Thank You Lego Duplo!! And . . . Thank you Sunday Baker for sharing this with us!!
My 2 year old loves legos...this would be perfect for us to do together.
My son is a firecracker who can't sit still...unless there is a pile of legos involved. If I had invested all the money I spent on toys he didn't play with and just got legos I sure would have been a richer mom. The only other thing he likes are books so the combination of the two is unstoppable! Awesome idea! Perhaps the best way to teach is to find the best way to entertain. Can you remember the words to a song you heard 25 years ago but can't remember what you read 25 minutes ago?
I think this is a great idea! My younger kids who have not been interested in books would take more notice to these because they are interactive. They love to build and play with legos, so combining them with books is genius!
Oops! Forgot to add my email address to the foregoing post . . . Thanks!!

Oh my gosh! My son would LOVE this! He is very much into building things and trying to figure out how they work. The instructions look very simple and easy enough for him to understand. I am SO excited that you shared this product with us-if I don't win the contest, I will go out and buy this asap ;-)

What a fabulous invention by Lego~ My Boys have been Legos #1 fan for years. When it comes to their toy of choice a new Lego set is hands down at the top of their list! The new Duplo read & build is an awesome way to coordinate hand, eye, & reading skills all in one Super Fun Set! Bravo to yet another Lego invention for our dear prized possessions!!
Lego's are great! i think adding books to them is such a good idea! Now that I have 2 little ones, I think having something more interactive while reading would be very helpful! It's a little harder to read as much as I'd like and I think this would help.
what a great idea! My 4 yr old is having a tough time with the whole reading (and letters) thing and I think that this would be helpful for him. I too agree that legos between brothers is a good thing!
I saw a commercial for this LEGO product the other day on tv and thought it was a wonderful idea. Both of my kids love LEGOS and I've been meaning to get more! Because they have fun playing with them, I think that can make learning fun! (I think my email is on my blog profile.)
I love this concept and think it would make an awesome Christmas present for my 3 1/2 yr old grandson. He loves to build and read stories. He even shows the pictures to his animals just like a librarian or teacher would do--so cute. I think combining fun with reading is the way to go! Thanks so much for the chance to win. Dar
I think this will keep them interested in reading the book to learn how to put the blocks together. They will also learn to follow direction and colors and shapes. Awesome idea since most kids like action with their stories.
My stepnephew loves to take his dinosaur toys out when I read to him with books that have dinosaurs he loves to read but I love anything that makes reading fun!
what a great idea! read and build! my son , 5 years old, LOVES to build things constantly. This type book might help encourage his learning to read in order to follow the directions in the story etc.
My children's 2 fav toys are books and Legos. This new idea will be an awesome way to put those together. My kids would love to build what they see in books!
This is awesome! My 2 1/2 yr old can't play with the Lego kits because the parts are too small, but these Duplo kits are perfect!
Oh, I didn't answer the question. The activity of building as you tell the story is a great tool to teach reading and makes it very fun.
My niece is expecting a baby boy, so I'd love to win this for her!
What an amazing concept Lego has come up with!!!! By combining Lego building blocks with a fun direction/story book, they've incorporated different learning styles (visual, tactile, and auditory) in a wonderfully creative manner. What child wouldn't find this enchanting?! Along the way, they will painlessly gain reading and motor skills while enjoying the process. Definitely a win-win all around!
P.S. Henry is so cute and has gotten so Big!
P.S.S. Having trouble w/ my iPad and double comments - sorry.
i see any activity that incorporates reading with a beloved toy or brand as a winner.
I believe that any time you had a kinetic activity with reading and learning that it is more meaningful and therefore more likely to be remembered! Thanks for a chance to win and have a great day!

I love the idea of kids learning to read AND follow instructions. So helpful when school rolls around! Read & Build will help because it's interactive. He'll love building the characters from the stories and seeing them take shape as he goes!
Didn't know about this wonderful product until now! I believe the LEGO DUPLO Read & Build will help my kids learn to read with all those fun colors block building and interaction. For sure this is a lot more fun than just reading the book.

i think it would help because she loves interactive stories

I would hope that the more we read the book and put together the blocks it would help with word association. My son loves both Lego’s and books, so great to see them together!

This could help my child learn by engaging them in an activity that helps them truly interact with the text, by way of the building blocks. Very cool product!
my daughter is learning to read and does really well with this level of book, she'd love the 'hands on' component, such an important part of learning for this age!

My son absolutely LOVES legos. I think the key to learning is engaging the child, capturing their attention, working with their imagination. I think the Lego Duplo Read and Build, would be fun for my son. And when your having fun, learning is easy. Incorporating something he loves, likes legos, and adding in books (which he loves), would be a great tool to helping my son polish up his reading skills. This would be wonderful!

This is a great idea! I'm curious if there is anything suited for older kids. My 9 year old son loves Lego's and loves reading (mostly pictures-not too many words). Would be a great idea to incorporate more complex things to build and make the reading a bit more complex for older kids too.

My kids love Legos. What a great learning tool. Promoting reading and learning to make new items out of Legos. Ingenious.
This is great...it'll keep my son engaged. Reading and playing together is a great combination!

This is wonderful!! My boys are obsessed with anything that has the Lego logo. I have two boys, 13 yrs old and a almost 9yr old. My 9yr old is in the local NASA Lego program and my 13yr old is very involved with Lego Technics. I have a 3yr old neice who comes over daily and gets a lil upset b.c besides the Duplo blocks, the boys Legos are too advance for her. She sees them sitting down and looking at the building instructions and has asked how come hers does not come with a book! This is such a hands on activity to have for her. She can join in on the fun with the big boys. She loves books. Almost always has one in her hands. This is a great idea for the begainers in life!!! Thanks Lego!!!!
this makes it fun to learn to read

My son would benefit from this because it engages him in the story to be an active participant, a core thing for my 3 year old!
Lego is such a classic toy and already encourages creativity. This new set is a great way to encourage kids to be engaged in reading.
Love this idea! Engage the kids creativity mind while reading at the same time.
I think it will help my son with reading because he will be able to connect the pictures and what he can build with what the book is talking about.

LEGO activities encourage reading as kids know the importance of the directions linking to the finished project! At Christmas time my grandson received a set of legos... he opened his package and promptly displayed the instructions to his Grandpa, saying, "We need this map!"
sweet tweet...

I think the fact that my 3 year old can engage in the storyline along with building will encourage him!

Both my boys love Legos. I saved my sets from when I was younger and they play with those also. Lego Duplo Read and Build is an excellent idea for kids that are interested and reading and definitely for those that aren't. My oldest has fun putting together Lego sets using the instructions and making things off the top of his head. Legos in general are a great learning tool.

My daughter is almost 2 and loves putting together her Duplos! She also loves to look at books and have me read her stories, so this would be a great way to encourage early reading.
I think it would encourage my sons to actively and independently pursue reading since it's a subject that interests them!
LEGOS! No need to say more to my son! He will beg me to read if we had this.
Wow what a great idea! My 3-yr-old loves Legos and Books and we are working on teaching her how to follow instructions. This is PERFECT!
Fell into your blog looking for recipes and was NOT disappointed...can't wait to try a bunch of them! Your at the top of my favs list!
