Even though there's a 13 year gap between Sam and Henry, one of the toy products that they both love is LEGO. Honestly, I know most adults love to build with LEGOs. I had the opportunity to try a new LEGO product out with Henry that combines two really awesome things: building with LEGO and reading!
I'm a huge fan of reading with my kids. Our home is filled with children's books and Henry's favorite thing to do is sit on the couch or his reading tent and have someone read to him. Sometimes, as soon as someone walks through the door to visit, he has a book ready and is begging them to read it to him.
Colin and Sam did this when they were little too. I know research shows that looking at and reading books to toddlers from early on creates stronger, better readers in elementary school. I believe this completely. Sam and Colin were always at the very top of their classes in reading, and Sam still aces his state testing in reading.
LEGO is introducing a new product called LEGO DUPLO Read and Build. It is a set of LEGO building bricks that correlate with a book, which leads your child to engage in the storyline and help them to learn to read.
The pictures in the book demonstrating which LEGO bricks to use are colorful and simple, making it easy for even a young toddler to find the appropriate bricks.
Each page shows you the bricks you need using a large, easy-to-follow format with bright colors.

Henry really enjoyed the book and building the plane and car. He caught on quickly and it was really fun to do with him! At first he just wanted to do his own thing, but once he caught on that he needed to find the pieces in the picture and put them together the way it showed in the book, it became a fun game for him. It is a simple concept that is perfect for this young age, and I look forward to trying new books and sets.

My son, George, is 2 1/2 and obsessed with Legos. It is wonderful, especially because he and his dad really bond when playing with them. I think the Read and Build is genius, because the interactiveness will help hold an active toddler's interest, therefore helping him learn to read.

My son started playing with legos @ 29 years ago. He's now 31 years of age and has children of his own ranging from 11 months to 13 years. So, recently I pulled out his 15 gallon tub of Legos. My grandchildren literally spend hours together constructing (and deconstructing), laughing and playing. I thought (and still do think) that Legos are a fabulous way to spark the imagination (no matter what the age, whether 3 or 83). I, as well, have shelves of children's books and encourage reading at a very early age. To combine reading and building with Legos is a fabulous idea!! Not only will the children have fun building, but they will want to read and learn how to follow directions to make the story they are reading come to life. My 2 year old loves legos...this would be perfect for us to do together.
My son is a firecracker who can't sit still...unless there is a pile of legos involved. If I had invested all the money I spent on toys he didn't play with and just got legos I sure would have been a richer mom. The only other thing he likes are books so the combination of the two is unstoppable! Awesome idea! Perhaps the best way to teach is to find the best way to entertain. Can you remember the words to a song you heard 25 years ago but can't remember what you read 25 minutes ago?
I think this is a great idea! My younger kids who have not been interested in books would take more notice to these because they are interactive. They love to build and play with legos, so combining them with books is genius!

Oh my gosh! My son would LOVE this! He is very much into building things and trying to figure out how they work. The instructions look very simple and easy enough for him to understand. What a fabulous invention by Lego~ My Boys have been Legos #1 fan for years. When it comes to their toy of choice a new Lego set is hands down at the top of their list! The new Duplo read & build is an awesome way to coordinate hand, eye, & reading skills all in one Super Fun Set! Bravo to yet another Lego invention for our dear prized possessions!!
Lego's are great! i think adding books to them is such a good idea! Now that I have 2 little ones, I think having something more interactive while reading would be very helpful! It's a little harder to read as much as I'd like and I think this would help.

I saw a commercial for this LEGO product the other day on tv and thought it was a wonderful idea. Both of my kids love LEGOS and I've been meaning to get more! Because they have fun playing with them, I think that can make learning fun! (I think my email is on my blog profile.)

I think this will keep them interested in reading the book to learn how to put the blocks together. They will also learn to follow direction and colors and shapes. Awesome idea since most kids like action with their stories.
My stepnephew loves to take his dinosaur toys out when I read to him with books that have dinosaurs he loves to read but I love anything that makes reading fun!

What an amazing concept Lego has come up with!!!! By combining Lego building blocks with a fun direction/story book, they've incorporated different learning styles (visual, tactile, and auditory) in a wonderfully creative manner. What child wouldn't find this enchanting?! Along the way, they will painlessly gain reading and motor skills while enjoying the process. Definitely a win-win all around!

I love the idea of kids learning to read AND follow instructions. So helpful when school rolls around! Read & Build will help because it's interactive. He'll love building the characters from the stories and seeing them take shape as he goes!

My son absolutely LOVES legos. I think the key to learning is engaging the child, capturing their attention, working with their imagination. I think the Lego Duplo Read and Build, would be fun for my son. And when your having fun, learning is easy. Incorporating something he loves, likes legos, and adding in books (which he loves), would be a great tool to helping my son polish up his reading skills. This would be wonderful!

This is a great idea! I'm curious if there is anything suited for older kids. My 9 year old son loves Lego's and loves reading (mostly pictures-not too many words). Would be a great idea to incorporate more complex things to build and make the reading a bit more complex for older kids too.

This is wonderful!! My boys are obsessed with anything that has the Lego logo. I have two boys, 13 yrs old and a almost 9yr old. My 9yr old is in the local NASA Lego program and my 13yr old is very involved with Lego Technics. I have a 3yr old neice who comes over daily and gets a lil upset b.c besides the Duplo blocks, the boys Legos are too advance for her. She sees them sitting down and looking at the building instructions and has asked how come hers does not come with a book! This is such a hands on activity to have for her. She can join in on the fun with the big boys. She loves books. Almost always has one in her hands. This is a great idea for the begainers in life!!! Thanks Lego!!!!

LEGO activities encourage reading as kids know the importance of the directions linking to the finished project! At Christmas time my grandson received a set of legos... he opened his package and promptly displayed the instructions to his Grandpa, saying, "We need this map!"

Both my boys love Legos. I saved my sets from when I was younger and they play with those also. Lego Duplo Read and Build is an excellent idea for kids that are interested and reading and definitely for those that aren't. My oldest has fun putting together Lego sets using the instructions and making things off the top of his head. Legos in general are a great learning tool.
