Kitchen Sprucing and Projects (diy chalkboard)

Lately I've been a little obsessed with organizing our house and improving spaces in it. Once I start, I'm like a woman on a mission and I can't stop until it's done. As the threat of going back to work {end of August} looms in my head, all I can think about is how unorganized and frazzled I was this last year of work, not at work but here at home.

A large part of that was due to a somewhat organized house becoming more and more unorganized and neglected because I was so tired at the end of my work days. I have to come up with a way to conquer that. I'm not sure there is such a thing, but I know that if I start with a very put together home, it can't hurt.

I've started with the recently renovated kitchen. We still have a few things to do, but they are mostly decorative. I love this space so much now that I barely leave it. BUT, my drawers and cabinets need a lot of help. Some of them are so stuffed with junk it's laughable.

I started with removing all of the old contact paper that was lining the drawers and replacing it with new. The new pattern wasn't my first choice, but it was the best that we had available in our small town and I'm not a person who can wait to do something! I really like using contact paper because it's inexpensive and so easy to remove and replace.

I gave Rich all of my mismatched kitchen towels for garage rags and kept all white. It's much better than a million towels falling out of the drawer every time it's opened.

THEN...

I needed to tackle some issues with the new pantry and snacking. Being that it's summer, I've noticed that Sam was finishing off every sugary snack he could find in the pantry. We were also starting to get too many packages of half-opened snacks that were getting spilled or going stale. So I bought 3 bins from the dollar store for $1.50 each and labeled them in categories {Savory, Crackers Cookies and Bars, Candy and Junk}.

I use snack-sized Ziploc baggies and portioned out all of the packaged snacks, healthy or not. I put almonds and rice cakes into 100 calorie portions {helpful for me!} and the not so good for you snacks into portions I was ok with the boys eating at at time. We reuse the baggies and this system has been working GREAT so far! Sam even told me he really likes it and has actually been making healthier choices.

Portioned "Savory" Snacks

Candy and Junk(this bin is still full!)

Cookies, Bars, and Crackers

THEN..

I have this space above the stovetop where we left the cabinet door off so I could use the space for something decorative. It's never really come together for me no matter what I put there. So I decided to try some old contact paper I had. I'm not sure I love it, but it's growing on me and adds some visual interest to the kitchen. I like that I can just pull it down easily and replace with another pattern.

The space Before

The space After-what do you think?

AND THEN..

We have a large, blank wall opposite of our dining table. I've been throwing around all sorts of ideas for this space, but nothing has come together. One day I was looking at this canvas print I had laying around that no longer went with anything in our home. I had bought it online years ago and while it's very nice, it's just not me anymore.

It's quite large and that got me thinking about doing a chalkboard for my blank wall. I know everyone is doing chalkboard paint on everything, but I think it's a fun thing to have in your kitchen because you can change it up. So I bought some of this:

I painted the ugly gold frame with a white enamel paint, leaving a very antique look. I love the difference!

And then I taped up the print {it doesn't come out of the frame without destroying it} and painted 2 coats of the chalkboard paint {4 hours of drying in between coats}.

 I had some helpers...

I can't believe how nice it is to write on with chalk, and it was sooo easy! I just put a quote on it for now, but I plan on doing a menu board and putting a buffet under it. I'll share that once it's done..

I also made a fun little terrarium with some succulents my friend Deb gave me.

Whew! That is only the beginning...I have so much more left to do..Thank God for summer :)

Love the look. For that space over your stove have you considered cutting a piece of cardboard to fit and cover it with your favorite fabric? You can change it out whenever you want. I saw someone had done that with the back wall of her bookcase shelves.

I love your sweet and soulful style. I am inspired to have another whack at my pantry! The shelf above the stove turned out perfect...and could be swapped out for seasonal displays.
