Kitchen Unworthy

housebeautiful.com

I've had several emails throughout the last year or so requesting photos of my wonderful kitchen....oh boy! Our home was built in 1963 and our kitchen is still resembling that era. Full of blond colored cabinetry and trim with vintage (but not in a good way) hardware, the place is screaming for a makeover. Badly. Very Very badly.

No, Sunday Baker does not have a gourmet kitchen. The funny thing is, I don't really want one. I love my quaint country kitchen and the big 'default' kitchens with the granite countertops and stainless steel appliances just don't do it for me. They look very nice, but they aren't me.

So the hubby and I are getting ready to give the old girl a facelift. Nothing fancy, just small things that will change the look. Here is our current, very dated kitchen. It is bigger than it looks in this photo, and this is just one angle, but you get the idea:

Aren't those 1963 'vintage' cabinets lovely? Oh boy...

And here are some of my ideas and inspirations:

Our kitchen walls (that you can't see in the photo) will be getting a white beadboard and all of the trim will be painted as well. The little peninsula will also have beadboard all around it, similar to the one in this photo:

I prefer the look of painted cabinets, when it's done well. We'll be painting ours in "alabaster" from Sherwin Williams. This should really brighten up that yellowish tone they have:

"Alabaster"

Here's another kitchen with similar beadboard and colors:

I like this idea of painting the cabinetry interiors a different, fresh color!

I like the black pendant hanging lights. I know Ikea has some that are similar and very inexpensive:

The windows will have a simple matchstick shade in a brown tone to soften the white:

And my dream floors look like this:

And here is my hutch that I will be painting and changing out the hardware. I may even wallpaper the back wall or paint it an interesting color to contrast. I can't wait to start it!

As for hardware, I'm still deciding. I've heard that black is in, but I'm not sure if I'll like that yet. Hardware is expensive too! I think I'll be combing Ebay for some deals.

Make sure to hang out with us and give us ideas as we redo this room. There will be many photos and curse words to share, but in the end I will have a kitchen that is worthy to show you!

Wow, I think your kitchen is great! It's huge with plenty of counter space!!! (I've got a very sad excuse for a kitchen. Hopefully someday, probably years down the road, that will change because I do really love to bake!)

I like all of your ideas for changes, too. I'm no decorator so I can't really offer advice. Although, I will say that even if black hardware is "in" I'm really not much of a fan. And besides, who knows how long it will be "in" anyway. I don't particularly like to go along with trends...can you tell?!

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing lots of pictures in the future!

I love your ideas for your new kitchen...can't wait to see it in progress. I really like the inside of the cabinets painted a different color; that's a great idea.

Your plans look beautiful. The white really brightens up the kitchen.

Go to knobsandpulls.com for cheap hardware. My friends built a house and that's where she got almost all of their's and it is great.

I love all the inspiration pieces that you picked out. I have always dreamed of a white beadboarded kitchen myself. It just looks so fresh and clean. Can't wait to see what you all come up with!! Keep us posted! :)

I see so many possibilities in your kitchen. Of course, I'm one of those folks who just ♥'s to tackle jobs such as yours. Begin a little at a time and you'll be done in a flash!

your ideas are GREAT!!!! you could mix it up, do stainless hardware, or do black to match the light fixtures you like so much. i love beadboard. it offers so many possibilities. are you keeping your countertops? a cool idea would be removing the section of countertop that's on your island-bar-thingie and putting in butcher block ,and leaving the rest of the counters as they are... inexpensive but something different. love the idea of painting the interior of the cabinets!!!! i have your standard green granite and light blonde 42" cabinets, and while i love the functioning granite i do wish for more personality. have fun!!!

What a wonderful post explaining what you plan to do to update your kitchen by using words along with tear sheet photos. I can't wait to see photos when you complete the project!

I like this kitchen...I think it is very cozy! I think we should all post pics of our kitchens. I LOVE looking at different kitchens. I think they make the home. Can't wait to see what you do! Good Luck! :)

I think I have your exact same cabinets! The only difference is that my handles are horizontal. When we did our facelift, I sanded and re-stained all the cabinets because I prefer the stained look to the painted look. You have tons more counterspace than I do though! Have fun with your project!

I love those dark, shiny hardwood floors that you see on those expensive homes on HGTV. I love watching that show on HGTV where she does the kitchen makeovers. Good luck!

How exciting! My kitchen is white w/ black granite counters, which I love! It's my first home with white cabinets, but really easy to keep clean. Our home is only a few years old and we purchased it already done. So it was a win, win. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

Cathleen

How exciting Tanya! Yes, you don't need to spend a squillion to get what you need or want. I do reckon though that you'll be the most glamorous Renovator in Blogland!

I like your kitchen ideas! It will be a nice change from what all of the kitchens today are like. Everyone's kitchens these days look the same (granite and stainless..I wonder if granite and stainless will be dated like the green and gold appliances of the 60s and 70s? ha! "Oh, that's soooo year 2000!). I think the clean white and bead board will be wonderful. You could even do a glass front on one or two cabinets to show off pretty mixing bowls.

I want matchstick blinds too. I just can't find any that are inexpensive enough (I have lots of windows to cover).

You have my mom's cupboards! Hardware is exactly the same and placed diagonally, just like yours!

I think you have a nice kitchen, it is really a great size with lots of countertop space. I cannot wait to see it's new look.

I have a very small 80's kitchen. I have updated it a bit with a new stove, tile floor & new countertops. I would really love to paint the cabinets, but I am really scared to do it!

You have awesome ideas! I have a very tiny kitchen, but I love its Robin's Egg blue color, and have worked around it to make it just cute and "me" however I can.

Your kitchen is cute already, but it will be even cuter when you are done. Have fun!

Oh you are killing me. I have the worst case of kitchen envy, I can really only fit one person in it comfortably. I will post a pic someday. Love your ideas and think your kitchen is great as is!
