Age-Old Hair Dilemma (help)

This entry has absolutely nothing to do with food or our pantry challenge, but it is about something near and dear to all women's hearts: HAIR. Next week I go in to get my hair done, and I'm doing what I do everytime my appointment gets close. I obsess about whether or not I should do something different. I pour over celebrity photos looking for a new style. This time I'm asking for your help. And, I want completely HONEST opinions...please!

The big question is: Bangs or no Bangs? That's my age-old hair dilemma. Here's my hair now:

Ignore this horrible photo...do you like my new bathroom wall color?

And here are the inspiration photos with the bangs that are so cute. Maybe I should stop picking photos that have gorgeous models and celebrities on them for inspiration. Then, after I get my hair done, I look back at their photo and wonder why mine doesn't look that good....:

And then there's the issue of the color. I'm clearly not the brunette my husband married:

Notice Rich's Wayne Newton hair-do!! Ha ha!

In fact, every year my hair gets more and more blonde. I can't help it. I LOVE blonde. I can't help but say that I DO think it's more fun. The only problem is the upkeep. The other day I was at work, outside with some students that I don't normally work with. I had a hat on the entire recess. When I took it off to go in, one of the little girls said, "Mrs. B, your hair looks just like my Aunty's, except hers doesn't have that black color in it." That black color being my dark roots...oy! I think about getting some darker color put in, but I'm so in love with blonde.

Here's where you come in....Please tell me your opinions: Bangs or NO bangs? Blonde or Brunette? Short or Long? If you have a cute style to share, please post the link here... I will soon get back to my regularly scheduled food postings, but this is a hair SOS ladies...

I like your hair! It is cute. How about no bangs and just layer the rest. Keep it blonde!! They do have more fun!! I need to get mine done too. I am so lazy about it!

Meg said...

I would definitely keep the blonde. I think getting the cut in the picture of Jessica Simpson would be fun and sexy. I hate the anxiety of going to get my hair done. I always obsess over the color and style. Good luck!

Anna said...

The problem with bangs is that if you want to change them, it takes FOREVER to grow them out. I love your hair color and would keep that. Good luck with your decision!

Steph said...

Roots are evil :) Only mine are grey! I am always one for change. How about keeping the blonde, side bangs and layers like the 2nd celeb pic. It's not too short and can easily grow out. New year=new style. I know....easier said than done :) I have an appt on Tues with someone that I haven't been to before. I'm obsessing as well.

you are so beautiful that i think you can do anything you want with your hair, personally though, i think the bangs would be cute and stay blonde! again, you are too pretty like you are so nothing will be wrong for you!

I have recently struggled with this very problem. I ended up getting some "wispy" bangs. Nothing harsh. It has made such a difference. I think it has softened my face and made me look a little younger.

I also love blond hair. But I didn't love the upkeep, so I have gone a little darker. I think I would rather have the upkeep. Stay blond for as long as you love it.

I think you are very pretty and anything would be cute on you! I personaly like the second photo and think that would be adorable one you! Oh and I would stay blonde, I love blonde too!!

Actually Tanya, you're a beauty just as you are!
Women like change though....and I vote for the second pic, with bangs, and layers, it's a swingy, sexy, updated look. Your soul is that of a blonde, nevah...evah...go back!

Now MY prob is that all my roots grow in gray!!!! hehee!

linda t said...

I think the middle pic (Jessica S.) would not only be super flattering on you but you would love the length and the layers and the option of sweeping your bangs or having no bangs. Lots of options.

And I would go more brunette... so the roots aren't so noticeable.

Just my opinion.
You're a doll no matter what you do.

Found your blog through a blog and love it!
I say go for the bangs...I just got some and I love them...try it out...and if you don't like it your hair will always grow out :)

Lisa said...

You have beautiful hair so I think you should keep it long and blonde. I do love the long swept bangs pictures and think you would look adorable with them. Good luck!

Hey Tanya! Personally I LOVE your hair the way it is. I am a natural blonde, but I've been dying my hair red/burgundy for a LONNNG time. I incorporate some blonde always, but I've grown to like it dark. I miss blonde. I love long hair.. it's totally sexy to me. I say keep it long and blonde. As far as bangs, maybe just do long, side-swept bangs... Like the first picture (the girl in the white tank). Just my ideas! Good luck! I can't wait to see how it all comes out!

Tanya,
I think the 2nd photo of Jessica Simpson's shoulder length hair would look great on you!
Long enough to pull back but soft around your lovely face ~
Keep the blonde and add light brown low lights. Less upkeep~
You are truly beautiful inside and out ~

Michelle said...

So...ok...I'm visiting from Imperfectly Beautiful, and I just had to comment before checking out the rest of your blog.

I'm almost back to my natural color...after being a blondie too. I was just getting so tired of the upkeep! Your hair is beautiful...go natural! As far as the style...my votes are for pic numbers 2 and 3. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!!

Now off to check out the rest of your blog!

MomToTwo said...

I'd say keep the length (or go slightly shorter in stages, you will be unhappy if you go too short too quickly.) No bangs - but that's because I'm anti-bang. :) And I'd ad in some darker lowlights, just because it makes it easier to keep up/manage. You don't have to be as quick to touch up the roots. :) But I'd love you even if you went with a purple and pink Mohawk! :)

maryjmaalouf said...

Tanya, you are so beautiful! Anything you do to your hair will look fantastic! Why not go for the bangs maybe like the first picture and add some layers, it might be fun! It will always grow out if you don't like it:) Oh, and you look good as a blonde!

Susan said...

This is tough- I always stress about this stuff too- actually I have wanted to do something for quite a while to mask the greys that I now have (maybe some very fine highlights-I dont want to look striped )and fear keeps me from doing it.I am a brunette and wanted lighter highlights or lowlights -whatever they are called!

You are beautiful and so is your hair...the blonde is very attractive on you -I vote stay blonde!

The length is a tough question...I like that 2nd picture a lot because its sexy and free-easy to wear but you know men really like long hair! What does your husband like most on you?

Bangs- well I have never really been a fan but that is on me...I think you would look adorable in those long wispy sort of bangs. Nothing severe...

I know everyone always says"oh dont worry it will always grow" Im not that daring myself...but if you arent comfortable with it...just dont do it!
If you are brave than I would say play and have fun with it! In 6 months you can change it again .

Hello there... LOVE the bangs! A think I like to do with photos of hairstyles is to color the face of the model so I truly just see the HAIR and not the beautiful face. lol! Silly but it might help.

LOVE your blog... I was so touched by your sweet story of your son Colin. My heart broke when I heard your story and I thank you for sharing it. It is a reminder to live in the NOW and enjoy every day we have.

Have a wonderful day! Heather

I am envious of anyone who can get away WITHOUT bangs! I think some sideswept bangs would look great on you... and leave you the option of pushing the to the side easily.

I would also say if the upkeep of blonde is bugging you, I'd go with a slightly darker shade of blonde. That way you might be able to get away with a bit longer in between color.

Hello there! My name is June said...

Blonde... and with your heart shaped face, you'd look great with the jessica simpson 'do' photo you posted. Longer layered & angled bangs would look great like that ...swept off to the side...and they'd be nice to transition out of if you grew tired of them.

You have beautiful hair-I say keep it long and add some layers and maybe longer bangs. Maybe go brunette for a while just so it will be less upkeep. Beautiful either way you go!!

Okay...I'm bucking the pack here and voting for a shade of RED. Your skin is fair enough that you could pull it off. Yes, I'm biased...I'm naturally red and everyone loves it. If your roots grow in a bit it's easier to cover or blend in, too. As for short or long: short is so much less to maintain. Layers are great! The only issue with bangs is once you have them you might never go back. It's hard to give 'em up!

Have fun at your appointment!!

I think you're absolutely beautiful just the way you are and you are very photogenic too!

Anyway, your long hair is so pretty - just go and ask them to do graduated layers, sort of like the Jessica Simpson cut that you have up there for the front, but taking it long down your back. I think they call that a modified gypsy maybe.

As far as bangs, I would just do some layering at the cheeks for some lift there, but not bangs. Every time I've ever had bangs done, I have ALWAYS regretted it.

I know what you mean about the blonde - I used to highlight mine but of course ever time you do it, it gets lighter and lighter all over till finally you're basically just blonde all over. I was blonde when I was younger and spent a lot of time at the beach and I guess I wanted that back! I finally just let mine go back to it's natural brunette color and now I just want to use some color to add tones. I love the blonde too but it's too much upkeep!

I need a cut and color too - I just keep letting it grow and donating my ponytails! I really need a makeover myself!

I was just thinking about hair the other day. In fact, I have a taken a few pictures of my own but was afraid to post it all once I finished writing. Maybe you have made me brave. We will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, I love your hair. It is everything mine is not. It is not mousy, it is not curly, it is not out of control. It seems to suit you well, as this is the hair I know you with through your blog. Personally, I don't want to sound, weird, but you are stunning. Bangs, in my opinion, will cover up your pretty face. ~Kelly

Helen said...

I really like the Jessica Simpson one too! Sideswept fringe (that's what we call 'bangs' in Australia) and then a few layers but retaining the overall length.

I reckon I would be completely grey (at 38!!) if I didn't colour my hair and I colour just the regrowth every 4 weeks. At the 8 week mark, after doing the regrowth, I put the remainder of the colour through the rest of my hair for the last 10 minutes to freshen up the overall colour. You're going to look gorgeous no matter what and remember we all want to see the 'new you'!

Lucy said...

You're beautiful and I love your hair! My opinion: keep it blonde & bangs! I think bangs would be enough of "doing something different" without the huge commitment of cutting the rest. And I like the bangs on the first picture. I also think if they're long bangs, and you don't like them, they won't take as long to grow out a bit. Good luck!

Catherine said...

I'm thinking maybe two inches off. I like the Jessica Simpson bangs and think a rich brown would be beautiful.

Katrina said...

I ditto what a lot of others are saying. You look great blonde! If you're really going to do something or change something, I love the second picture (Jessica) and think that would be a really fun change for you.
Can't wait for you to surprise us all and show us what you end up doing! Good luck, it is scary! ;)

Erin H. said...

I suggest bangs...not necessarily above the eyebrow short though...I'm thinking longer bangs that could also be swept to the side. As far as color, I say keep the blonde but how about go with a shade or two darker blonde undertones with the lightness you like...that way you get depth and richness. I can also see your hair cut a few inches shorter with a bit longer length in the front and layered. You may think that it all might be extreme but it is hair and it will grow if you don't like it. I think you would though!

OUR JOURNEY said...

First of all I didn't read any one else's comment so hopefully this hasn't already been said.....are you the type of person that will spend the time to style your hair? If so do the bangs....jessica simpson is my fav...I recommend her hair style...short too or just bangs? Also leave blonde..and you would fit in with the models just fine! Take care.

Kristi said...

I'm probably not the best person to ask because my philosophy is always "it's just hair - it'll grow" and I have super short hair! But I really it would look really cute with about 2 inches gone, bangs, and go darker. If you hate the dark you can always lighten it up!

smilemonsters said...

I just gave up on the dark roots and went back to brunette. I think your current hair is super cute but a change is always good too! That's my motto anyway. :)

Thanks SO much for all ofthe great tips and advice. The Jessica Simpson pic seems to be in the favor of the majority...I think I'm too chicken to go that short, but I love her bangs and color.

I need some lift and layers are probably a good idea...I love reading your suggestions. It's nice to get a point of view from people who don't see you everyday!

Hi Tanya,

I love your blonde Hair! I go thru the same dilemma too! My Hubby has laid down the law no more bangs for me! Although my hair had been one length I did add layers. I love your length, you may want to layer a bit. Can't wait to see what you do!

Are you kidding me? Those celebrities aren't as pretty as you are!

Definitely stay a blonde - it suits your skin tone- and I, too, like the cut that Jessica S. is sporting in that photo.

Can't wait to see what you do!

Definitely stay blonde while you're still young enough to pull it off. There's plenty of time later to go darker.

I think the bangs would look super cute on you, but I also think they will drive you insane as they start to grow out. Which will be fast, considering the length of them.

My final vote: No change!

Renee said...

Hmm,I seem to like the 2nd pic,I think that would look great on you & only you could pull it off, but it would just be a bigger change.I love the wispy bangs.I think your hair looks pretty blonde, but it could look just as pretty with your natural hair color that was meant to go with your skin, etc. :)I have dirty blonde hair & used to dye it blonde a lot & quit b/c I didn't want to keep messing with that junk just to be something I wasn't...not that it's a bad thing,it just gets tiring & so I'd rather focus on something else & just go natural. :) I can't wait to see what you decide to do! :) Renee

I think the second picture would really suit you, you have a great face shape!
As for colour, well me I am mousey blonde so only really have the options for highlights, brunette would drain me- you I guess could take both, but if you love being blonde then honey thats what you are so don't go changing!
Look forward to the "after" photos!

I love that pic of Britney and her hair style. That would look so beautiful on you!

As for color, I think either blonde or brunette would look great.

FORGET THE HAIR, WHAT COLOR DID YOU PAINT YOUR BATHROOM (ALSO, WHO MAKES IT?) LOL!!!!!

Terri said...

I love the middle photo! I think this length is so becoming. The bangs aren't to short so if you deside to grow them out it won't take long, and it is still long enough to pull up if you want.

You're gorgeous!
However I COMPLETELY understnad and can relate to the blonde delima...HOWEVER, I'd keep your color, and maybe do the hairdo in the second photo (the girl with the black shirt.) I'm not sure who it is, but I thought it was you originally, just with a different hairstyle.

Definitely keep it long!! I feel like there is an age when long hair is no longer very appropriate, and you are certainly not there, so keep it while you can!! And the blond is gorgeous. Bangs are a pain and growing them back out is even worst!

Malissa said...

I hate to say this, because I know you are bored with it, but I really love your hair leave it a lone!!
But- you want a change so- I say long side-swept bangs and a few thin honey colored streaks concentrated towards the crown where the roots tend to be darker.
Blunt cut a couple of inches of the bottom to freshen it up and you will feel like it is a lot shorter.
Two thumbs up on the bathroom wall color.

I reacently had my hair colored slowly back to blonde. It is still a light brown. I did get my bangs cut like in the photos that you have. I did this because it would still be long and I did't want to go too drastic the first time. I love it so far and I think it is the right lenght of bangs. Good luck. I like the color in your small id photo and I like the bangs a little shorter; just like the photo selection. Let us know how it turns out?

blueladybug said...

I would keep your blond hair; it looks great on you. If you are wanting to go shorter, then I would do it in gradual steps. I had long hair like you and went shorter last year. It seems that every time I get my hair cut, I go a little shorter. As far as bangs, I would go a side sweep style since that will be easier to grow out if you don't like them. I've had bangs since I was about 13 and I'm now thinking of growing them out, but it will take forever.

Anonymous said...

Let me start off by saying you would look beautiful with any haircut...seriously.

I usually love longer looks but I love the jessica simpson look. I also think a bit more of a highlighted blonde would fix the problem of a straight blonde. Just my thoughts. Coming from someone who hasnt had thier hair done for a year!!

Melanie said...

I love your hair but I do know how you feel. I grew mine out for lock of love but then was told that they wouldn't accept colored hair. (I don't know if that is true or not) I started by cutting off 7 inches & then 5. I grew it back out and cut it again with some layers. I LOVE blonde & I just pay to keep mine up. You look like a blonde. I have bangs but I NEED bangs & you don't. I would either keep it long, no bangs, & blonde or cut it like Jessica Simpson. Go big or go home:) Just my opinion.

...love Maegan said...

I do the same exact thing. I have to get my hair done now too and I am thinking, should I cut it, add bangs, change the color, etc. And you know what? I'll most likely go and get the same exact thing done that I always do. lol.

it looks good in the photos...and if that's what it looks like now, I say don't touch it at all :)

Girl, you are so gorgeous it really doesn't matter what you do to your hair. you'd probably look great with purple spikes...well, maybe not! My vote is for the picture you posted of Jessica Simpson's hair. Seriously, that exact cut and style and color would be GORGEOUS!!! And I think the shorter cut would probably be a nice change and way easier! Don't forget to post your after pics.

your hair is pretty. Dont change the color, just go with some long bangs.Thats what I would do first, because it doesnt seem too drastic from what you already have. keep us posted!!

+++++I am also a blond who is bored with my do, so for totally selfish reasons i want to see the end product!!++++

Sue said...

No Bangs....Once you cut bangs you are stuck with them for life because growing out bangs when you decide you don't like them is like ripping out your fingernails with pliers....and you look great as a blond.

Linda said...

From one blonde to another...it is called "deep conditioning"! Leave it blonde, you are beautiful that way. And as for the roots...well minbe have more gray these days, but I still wnat to be blonde!!
I would layer it more, like in the second photo. You looks great no moatter what!

Cathy Santarsiero, "The Christmas Corgi" said...

The blond is lovely, but I'll bet the brunette is pretty too. I think a drastic cut and color might make you unhappy. I would go with an angled, long layers cut with maybe one long layer in the back for some swing. Don't cut short bangs yet. You can always go shorter. You can always add some low-lights in rather than high-lights if you want to experiment with going back darker or a bit darker, like caramelly (is that a word?) low-lights throughout. Make sure you have a good colorist so you don't get brassy tones. The plus side of that is that your roots will blend in a bit better as they grow. From someone who plays with color. A lot. Cut, not so much (I like mine long)! xo Cat

Any of these would work for you. They are all very similar. I like the second picture. It just seems to have a little more style. Good luck. I know how you feel. I don't like my hair and when it's time to cut it, I can't really find anything else that I want. Plus, I want hair that requires no work!

Carissa said...

I like your hair as it is. I also like bangs, but they take a lot to manage, especially as they get longer. I love blonde, but I get highlights and low lights because I have darker blonde hair. I would try some low lights. I wouldn't go too short, but I'm partial to hair a little longer than the shoulders.

Donna in VA said...

I, personally, think you're beautiful. You could have a potato sack for hair and you'd still be gorgeous.
But I do understand the dilemma. I'm naturally blonde, but it's gotten darker and grayer as I've gotten older. I started out highlighting it, but now it's just ALL blonde. The highlights took over completely. I wonder all the time if I should put some lowlights in it to get it back to something more normal, but . . . I like being blonde.

Let us see the After pictures when you get it done.

kingsqueen said...

I love your hair first of all!
And I like the bangs - I think they would work well based on that first picture.
If you are really wanting a "CHANGE" (yes, big change, hence the all-caps! LOL) then I think the second photo looks fabulous too.
As far as the whole blonde upkeep thing I think that's up to you whether you still feel like maintaining it (including cost). If you don't want quite that level then think about going natural but with blone (or caramel) highlights. Blonde does look good on you though (I think we'd need a face shot as a brunette to give a really balanced opinion though!)
Good luck with your decision and I hope you'll be sharing photos of the new cut! :)

You have GORGEOUS hair Tanya! In my opinion I think you should do what your heart wants -(long, short, blond, bangs, no bangs...) - You're such a beautiful person inside out that if you shaved your head you would be gorgeous as ever.

So I say "just do it" girlfriend! You won't be happy 'til you do what you want.

I gave up on the blonde thing for awhile. I am pregnant and although I loved the blonde the upkeep was just getting to me. I went back to being a brunette and cut it a bit shorter-so much easier for upkeep. I have had more compliments lately on how much younger I look. Change is always fun remember its only hair it will grow back.

I love bangs and I am a blonde at heart too although my hair is brown at the moment. I just feel I lose a bit of my Mojo when my hair is brown, if that makes any sense.
I think you should get bangs and leave it long and blonde! Remember it's only hair and it will grow out so have fun with it!
